What Is The ABS QE?
The American Board of Surgery (ABS) certifies physicians in general surgery and surgical sub-specialties. The ABS General Surgery Qualifying Exam (QE) is offered annually to surgeons after completing their residency training, and must be passed in order to obtain initial certification to practice surgery. It is the first of two exams required for board certification in general surgery.
How Is The ABS QE Administered?
The QE tests a surgeon's knowledge of general surgical principles and their clinical application, and consists of approximately 300 multiple-choice questions. It is a one-day, 8-hour computer-based exam that is administered in four 115-minute sessions, with optional 10-minute breaks after session one and three, and a longer 40-minute break between the second and third session. Once a session has concluded, the questions in that session cannot be revisited.
