COMLEX Level 1
Level 1 is taken after completing the second year of medical school. It is a one-day exam, 8-hours, administered in two 4-hour testing sessions. The exam covers basic medical sciences including anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, osteopathic principles and practice, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, and public health.
COMLEX Level 2
Level 2 is taken during the third or fourth year of medical school. It consists of two parts, Level 2-CE, Cognitive Evaluation and Level 2-PE, Performance Evaluation. Level 2-CE is a multiple choice 8-hour exam, split into two sessions of 4-hours each. Level 2-CE tests emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, osteopathic principles, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery. Level 2-PE is a one-day, 7-hour clinical skills exam that utilizes standardized patients (actors) to test your clinical skills.
COMLEX Level 3
Level 3 is taken during the first year of residency. It is a two-day multiple-choice exam, consisting of four computer-based test sessions of 3 1/2 hours each, taken over two days (two sessions per day). Level 3 tests emergency medicine, family medicine, preventive medicine and health promotion, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, osteopathic principles and practice, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery.
